Looking for companies to transport car across country?
Whatever your reason for needing to ship your car cross country, these days interstate car transport is easy when you are prepared. Here’s a list of things you should do to prepare before handing over the keys to a car transport service:
Search for auto transport companies: Get online and start searching for auto transport companies. Contact a few companies and get auto shipping quotes from them. Remember; there are many factors the affect the cost to ship a car across country. Rates vary based on fuel prices, distance of transport, the size of the vehicle and whether it is modified, inoperable, or a classic car.
Broker or auto hauler or both: Since you’ll be shipping your car a long distance, you’ll need a car delivery service that can move your car nationwide. It may be a good idea to choose a company that is primarily an auto hauler, but also has a broker’s license. If the company is mainly an auto mover, they’ll have their own fleet of trucks upon which they can ship your car. However, if they don’t serve the area your transport order requires, if they have a broker‘s license they will have the ability to find car carriers they do business with to transport your car from point A to point B.
Research: Once you’ve gotten transport quotes from a few auto transporters, narrow your search by researching the companies. Look for customer reviews, either on the company’s site or on customer review sites. Also, check out their BBB rating. If you find a company with good reviews across the board, you’ll more than likely have a positive auto transport experience.
Ask questions: Contact the companies you want to ship your car. Ask them questions about the service they provide. Is it door to door or terminal to terminal? What is their policy regarding potential damage to your vehicle during transport? Is the quote you received the price you’ll pay, or are their extra charges for expedited delivery, top rack transport, etc? Will you be able to talk to a real person if there is a problem with the pickup or delivery of your vehicle or if you simply have a question regarding the transport of your auto? If there isn’t a big difference in the quotes you’ve gotten from the companies, customer service may be the deciding factor on which car transporter you choose.
Choose your company: Once you’ve done your homework, decide which company you want to transport your vehicle and book your order. At this point, you’ll get estimates for pickup and delivery dates. These dates are not set in stone, as there are a lot of factors that can affect the pickup and delivery of your vehicle. Weather and road conditions are two of the main factors that are out of the auto transporters control that may affect the dates you are given.
Prepare to transport car across country
Once you’ve booked your auto transport order, there are some tasks you should do to prepare your car before it is picked up. By doing these simple steps, you will increase the likelihood of a good auto transport experience.
Wash your car: This makes the vehicle condition report much easier to do. Inspect your vehicle with the truck driver before the car is loaded, and sign the Shipping Bill of Lading. All defects and damage, exterior and interior, need be documented on the Bill of Lading. You will also want to do another inspection when the car is delivered to its destination.
Remove personal items from your car: Transport companies are not moving companies. Remove all personal and valuable items before your car is loaded onto the carriers.
Accessories: Accessories need to either be secured or removed before you ship your car. Items that stick out like side mirrors and antenna should be folded in and retracted in order to reduce the chances of damage during the transport. Any loose parts or specialty items such as spoilers, fog lights, etc. should be removed or secured properly. If your vehicle is a convertible, all tears to the top should be repaired to avoid further damage during transit by wind.
Leave 1/4 tank of gas in vehicle: Leave only a little amount of gas in your car’s tank. And industry rule of thumb is the tank needs to be only a quarter full.
Alarms off: Turn off all of the car’s burglar alarms and radar detection units if you have them. Also, disengage any automatic toll readers.
Extra keys: Keep an extra set of keys handy. It’s a good idea to have a whole set of keys for you AND the transporter.
By following these suggestions, you’ll be much more likely to find a good auto transport company who will deliver your car across the country safely and quickly.
