Along with our other snowbird routes to Florida (NY to FL and NJ to FL), Illinois to Florida is another snowbird route we frequently ship cars on. We primarily ship cars from Illinois to Florida in late October through early December. This is when all the Illinois snowbirds head to Florida for the winter. Given the demand for auto transports during those months, it’s the most expensive time to ship a car from Illinois to Florida.
If you want to pay less to ship a car from Illinois to Florida, do it in early spring when those same Illinois snowbirds are heading back to Illinois after winter. The demand to ship cars to Florida in the spring isn’t as strong so the rates typically come down and then remain relatively stable through spring and summer.
One route that is popular between on this cross country car shipping route is Chicago, IL to Orlando, FL. The distance between those two cities is around 1,157 miles. A car carrier can usually travel that route in about 3 days. That means once your vehicle is picked up in Chicago, it will be delivered to Orlando just 3 days later.
If you ship a car from Illinois to Florida during the winter months, you have to be prepared for potential minor delays due to the weather. If a snowstorm hits Chicago, for example, a car carrier may be delayed a day or two depending on the road conditions. Weather-related delays are rare, but they can happen and when they do it’s usually during the winter months.

The vast majority of the Illinois auto transports we do is in northeast Illinois, specifically the Chicago metro area. “Chicagoland” has a population of around 9.5 million people and has two major trucking corridors that serve the area in the northwest and north (I-90 and I-94), and two trucking corridors in the southwest and south (I-55 and I-57). Given the area’s massive population and numerous interstates serving it, it is an ideal location for car carriers.
A few other car shipping locations in Illinois that aren’t too bad include Rockford in the north, and Peoria and Bloomington in the center of the state.
The most challenging areas to ship a car to or from in Illinois are those areas south of I-70, essentially the southern section of the state. Car carriers aren’t regularly traveling to southern Illinois because the towns and cities there don’t have large populations. Car carriers typically go to high population areas served by interstates. While there are certainly interstates serving southern Illinois, there aren’t a lot of highly populated cities.
Whether you live the Chicago metro area or the small town of Marion, IL in far southern Illinois, or anywhere in between, we can handle your auto transport. As a door-to-door auto transporter, we ship cars to and from any location in Illinois. We do a lot of transports to and from Florida, particularly snowbird transports between Florida and New York (and New York to Florida). There are five areas of Florida that we primarily ship to and from. Those areas include northeast Florida, central Florida, southeast Florida, southwest Florida, and the panhandle. The sixth area that we do transports for, but not nearly as often, is the Florida Keys.
The most popular shipping hub for auto transports in and out of Florida is Miami in southeast Florida. Other popular cities in the area include West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale. Any transports to or from southeast Florida, particularly Miami, we can get done pretty quickly, but of course these cities are further south in Florida so these transports will be more expensive than cities located in the northern parts of the state.
Speaking of the northern part of the state, Jacksonville in the northeast section of the state is a great car shipping location! In fact, it's one of the better car shipping locations in Florida.
The major cities in central Florida such as Orlando, Daytona Beach, Ocala, Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Lakeland are all great car shipping locations.
In the southwest Florida, the cities of Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples are all solid car shipping locations as well. Again, keep in mind that the further south you go down into Florida, the more your transport will be so Naples will be more expensive than Tampa, for example.
Heading back up north to the panhandle, Tallahassee is the best car shipping location in the panhandle, but the rest of the cities along the panhandle are hit or miss depending on the shipping location on the other side of the transport. Car carriers shy away from the panhandle unless they are shipping to or from the cities in the panhandle, such as Panama City and Pensacola, to or from cities along I-10 in the southern part of the country. I-10 is a busy cross-country trucking corridor that runs through the panhandle and through Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Otherwise if you are shipping to or from the panhandle cities to or from the northwest, north, or northeast, these transports can be challenging at times (can take more time and more money to complete).
The most challenging area to ship to or from Florida is the Florida Keys. While we can certainly do these transports, we rarely do them as so few people are going to or from the Keys with their vehicles. Shipping to or from any of the cities along the Keys (Key Largo, Marathon, Key West) will be your most expensive transport options in Florida. You can save a lot of money shipping to or from the Keys by meeting a carrier in Miami instead!
One other interesting note about carriers that do Florida auto transports, they rarely serve both coasts of Florida with the same truck load. A carrier will either do all his transports along either the west or east coast on one trip, and then the other coast on another trip. He will rarely pick up and deliver vehicles on both coasts on the same trip. That means if your vehicle is being picked up or delivered in Miami, for example, that carrier will be traveling along the east coast of Florida with his current load of vehicles.
As a door-to-door auto transporter, we can ship to and from any location in Florida. It doesn’t matter if you’re shipping to or from Key Largo or Jacksonville or anywhere in between, we can handle it!
